The International Atomic Energy Agency is an organization of governments worldwide for scientific and technical cooperation in the field of atomic energy. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is an organization dedicated to the peaceful uses of atomic energy, established by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) through the adoption of the Statute of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on October 26, 1956, by a Conference of 82 nations participating in scientific and technical cooperation in the field of atomic energy.

The purpose of the IAEA is to seek to accelerate and enlarge the contribution of atomic energy to peace, health and prosperity throughout the world and to ensure that assistance provided by itself, or at its request, or under its supervision or control, is not used in furtherance of any military purpose. To carry out these responsibilities, the IAEA maintains an Emergency Response Center with a 24-hour response capability, a trained staff and communications capabilities with 220 points of contact worldwide. The Center also serves as the secretariat of the Inter-Agency Committee on Nuclear Accidents, which is the focal point of the United Nations system for coordinating responses to nuclear and radiological emergencies.
