One month after the visit of a comet that returns once every millennium, a rural village deep in Japan small town. Mitsuha, a female high school student, lives a melancholy life every day, and what worries her is not only the election campaign held by her father, who is the mayor, but also the ancient custom of passing down the shrine in her family. In this small town, there are only some worrying old people around. For this reason, Sanye is full of longing for the metropolis.

However, one day, I had a dream of becoming a boy. There are strange rooms and strange friends here. What appeared in front of me was the streets of Tokyo. Although Sanye was perplexed, she felt refreshed to be able to come to the city life she had longed for and dreamed of. On the other hand, Tachibana Taki, a male high school student living in Tokyo, also had a strange dream. In a remote mountain town that he has never been to, he became a high school girl. The two met each other in a dream like this.

At the production presentation of this work, Makoto Shinkai, the supervisor, said that the source of this story is a famous Japanese song by Ono Komachi: "If you meet in a dream and see no one, if you know it's a dream, why wake up. Even if you often meet in a tryst in a dream, how can it be compared to seeing it once." The film will also have a unique Japanese delicate style. Makoto Shinkai also expressed confidence that this work will become his highest masterpiece.
