Ret.io: The Mexican Civil Public Safety Network is a centralized collection network created by Mario Romero Zavala and José Antonio Bolio in Mexico City. The centralized collection of private messages from netizens created in Mexico City alerts people to the presence of police checkpoints that often harass locals in various ways.
Ret.io has multiple Twitter accounts in every state of Mexico, with 27,000 followers. Its website has over 100,000 unique monthly visitors, added map alerts and real-time updates, and its iPhone app is in the top 10 of the App Store (Apple App Store) navigation category. For the first year Ret.io was just a Twitter account that tracked and tweeted about anti-terrorism tips and tricks. In February this year it launched an iPhone application, but Romero Zavala admitted that the core functionality still relies on Twitter.
Although the app was initially used for people to report checkpoint locations, eventually users began to use the service for other purposes. Zavala noted that the site was not set up to combat Mexican drug cartels, but it does have something to do with it. He told TechCrunch, "Some of the reports are to help citizens avoid dangerous situations like shootings or roadblocks, some of which may be related to the drug war; but we don't think those are things that the consortium is really worried about, because they're completely public events."
Both Zavala and Borio are interested in financing a long-term operation, but they are currently trying to straighten out some things to make Ret.io serve better. Zavala says it's hard to get investment in Mexico, but he wants to expand the service outside of Mexico to make it easier for Ret.io to find investors. He said: "I think, as elsewhere, the Internet technology will be widely used in Mexico, the local situation is difficult to be covered up, which can only be a positive thing, but also make the community to eliminate trouble and work more closely together."
