The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is the nation's earliest intelligence police agency and the most powerful crime fighting agency in the United States, and was established in 1935 under the Department of Justice. Its primary responsibilities are to protect the security of the United States, investigate foreign intelligence and terrorist activities, and provide leadership and law enforcement assistance to federal, state, and international agencies. The FBI has the highest priority in the areas of counter-violence, drugs, organized crime, foreign counter-intelligence, violent crime, and white-collar crime.
