Founded in 1959, UCSD has a campus of 866 hectares (12,990 acres) Although it has only been in existence for just over 50 years, it ranks among the top three in the University of California system and is on par with UCLA in academic terms. It is also the top of the "Public Ivy League" and has produced 20 Nobel Prize winners, making it an important academic development site in the nation. As a result, UCSD ranks 5th in the nation in terms of total university research funding, surpassing Berkeley and Los Angeles in the UC system.
