The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), established in 1802, is the key agency in charge of national patent and trademark applications and kernel approval procedures, and is part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, whose primary responsibility is to provide patent protection, trademark registration and intellectual property certification for inventors and their related inventions.
