Alexa was founded in the United States in April 1996, when it was a small website, mainly for category navigation. In July 1997, Alexa released a software, now known as Alexa Toolbar. 1999, Alexa was acquired by the U.S. e-commerce flagship "Amazon", becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of the latter. Alexa became a wholly owned subsidiary of the latter.
