(TOTAL) is one of the world's four largest petrochemical companies, headquartered in Paris, France, and consisting of three brands: TOTAL, FINA and ELF. The company is present in more than 110 countries worldwide.

TOTAL was founded in November 1998 by French company TOTAL and Belgian company FINA. It is the product of the merger of FINA (Belgium) in November 1998 and the acquisition of ELF (France) by FINA in March 2000.

TOTAL has an Executive Committee with three administrative departments: Strategy and Risk Assessment, Finance and Human Resources, and three production departments: Upstream (exploration and development of crude oil and natural gas, natural gas and electricity), Downstream (refining and sales of refined products, international trading of crude oil and various refined products), and Chemicals. The three production divisions are chemicals.
