The University of Paris-Sud (University of Paris XI) was founded on January 1, 1970, as the Faculty of Science of the University of Paris. The university is one of the largest and most prestigious comprehensive national universities in France, including science, engineering, information, medicine, management, law, sports science, and other science and technology-based disciplines. The University of Paris-Sud was formerly known as the Faculty of Science of the University of Paris, and was founded as an independent university a few years after the May Storm. The university has five campuses around Paris, with most of the teaching and research institutions located on the Orsay campus.
