1860 Giovanni Panerai ( Giovanni Panerai (1825-1897), the founder of the Panerai family business, set up a watchmaking workshop in Ponte alle Grazie, Florence, and established an interactive relationship with the highly respected and renowned Swiss watchmakers.
After Giovanni Panerai, his son Leon Francesco, his son, succeeded him.
1860-1900
Guido Panerai, grandson of Giovanni Panerai ( 1873-1934) expanded the scope of his family's business and devoted himself to the manufacture of precision instruments, becoming the appointed supplier of the Italian Royal Navy.
Panerai moved its watchmaking workshop to Piazza San Giovanni in Florence, which is still the main store of the watchmaker. The words "Orologeria Svizzera" (Swiss watch store) on the signboard at the entrance are still vaguely recognizable, clearly emphasizing that Panerai is of noble Swiss origin.
In addition, the Manufacture also began to supply optical and mechanical tools to the Italian Ministry of Defence.
In 1910
the Manufacture began to develop luminous substances for instrument dials, scopes and telescopic devices, and finally succeeded in combining zinc sulfide and radioactive bromine to develop the luminous Radiomir. The mixture, when placed in a small glass tube, can effectively extend its life. With this successful invention, Guido Panerai was able to obtain patents in Italy and other countries.
1915-1918
The Italian Royal Navy used precision instruments made by Panerai during the First World War, including luminous devices for night-attack gun sights, chronographs, and depth measuring instruments. These included the luminescent device for the night attack gun sight, the timekeeping device, the depth measuring device, and the mechanical calculator to assist the high-speed torpedo steamer (MAS) in launching torpedoes.
