brief introduction

The basic mechanism of this site looks very simple. Users can post suggestions for worthwhile activities and can combine these activities into a series of suggestions called GameMaki. So, if you're looking for something to do, you can browse the site or see what your friends have posted, vote for or against the suggestions, and you can add some items to your to-do list. Once you've actually implemented the activity, you can claim it on this site and earn points and badges.

These game mechanics based on real-world activities application, particularly the way it awards points and badges, GameMaki may have taken inspiration from the location-based application Foursquare - which also includes some activity tips. As co-founder and CEO Keith Ng points out, the difference is that GameMak doesn't rely on your location, so you can join an event anywhere, such as "Run 10 miles".

That's not to say that GameMaki's challenges can't be location-specific. The company has developed a special set of events about the South through the recently launched Southwest Conference in Austin, and most of these events include location-specific visits, both at the GameMaki booth and by the conference organizers.

I've had a taste of the site, and the challenges clearly cover a lot of ground - from "Reviving 80's Tomorrow" to "Quit Weekend Shopping" to "Create your own version of Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night". If GameMaki users find interesting suggestions that are not available elsewhere, this could be an advantage.

But it also runs the risk that people will find the site a bit arbitrary.

Although GameMaki is now available to the public, it is still in beta, and Ng said his team is also working on a mobile app version.

The site was created by Socialico, an emerging Singaporean web company. Investors include MySpace founder Brad Greenspan's Social Fund and Robert Bong, administrator of UCSI University in Malaysia.
