The Sun of Senegal (Le Soleil, the first daily newspaper in sub-Saharan Africa, was founded in 1933 by Charles de Breteuil, a French press and publishing group, and was originally called "Paris-Dakar"; after the independence of Senegal, the newspaper was renamed in 1961 as After the independence of Senegal, the newspaper was renamed "Dakar-Matin" in 1961; it was later renamed on May 20, 1970 and published in Dakar, the capital. On January 8, 2014, Chinese Ambassador Xia Huang published an op-ed in The Sun entitled "History must not be forgotten", criticizing Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's visit to the Yasukuni Shrine.
