The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is a specialized organization, formerly known as the International Meteorological Organization, founded in 1873, officially renamed the World Meteorological Organization in 1950, and became a specialized agency of the United Nations in 1951. WMO's purposes include promoting cooperation among countries, working together on meteorological, hydrological and other observations, and promoting the standardization of meteorological observations.
