The Federal Institute for Water Supply, Wastewater Treatment and Water Protection (EAWAG), one of the four Swiss federal institutes, was founded in 1936 as an advisory office to the Department of Wastewater Treatment at the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, in the German-speaking part of Switzerland, to train professional doctoral students in water treatment, in addition to developing countries.
