The University of Fribourg is the only university that insists on bilingual The University of Fribourg is the only university that insists on bilingual education and administration. Students can complete their studies in both languages and receive a bilingual diploma, or they can choose to study in one of the languages and receive a monolingual diploma.

As a member of the Swiss Association of Universities, the University of Fribourg acts as a bridge between French-speaking and German-speaking universities. Together with the University of Bern and the University of Neuchâtel, the University of Fribourg is part of the Central Swiss University Consortium (BENEFRI), which is responsible for teaching and research.

The University of Fribourg has five departments: Theology, Law, Economics and Sociology, Liberal Arts, and Mathematics - Natural Sciences. The departments are divided into several institutes, such as the Faculty of Faith and Religious Sciences, the Faculty of Medieval Studies, the Faculty of International Telecommunications Management, and the Faculty of Pharmacology.

The Center for Education and Research in Foreign Languages (CERLE) is also a key unit of the University of Fribourg. The University of Fribourg offers a wide range of professional diplomas from undergraduate to doctoral level, as well as various vocational diplomas to provide opportunities for further study.
