The Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) is the maritime component of the Japanese Self Defense Force (JSDF), established on July 1, 1954, whose primary mission is to defend Japan's territorial waters, but in recent years has begun to participate in United Nations peacekeeping operations.
