Tarja Turunen is a Finnish lyric soprano and songwriter, known as the former lead singer of the Finnish Symphonic Power Metal Orchestra; she is considered one of the most important singers in Finland, and former Finnish President Tarja Halonen once called her the "Voice of Finland".

Taya was born in Kitai, Finland, and began studying music at the age of six. In 1996, she formed Nightwish with fellow student Tuomas Holopainen. That year, Taya also participated in the Savonlinna Opera Festival. But it wasn't until 1998, after the release of Nightwish's highly successful album "The Sea of Desire Reborn", that Taya became internationally known.

The band's lyrics are influenced by fantasy novels, particularly the Dragonlance series and J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. For example, "Wishmaster" and "Wanderlust" are influenced by these novels. In these songs, you can find "Carolingian Mountains", "Charafi", "Crain", "Elbereth "The Grey Havens" and "7 Days to the Wolves". The music of "7 Days to the Wolves" was inspired by Stephen King's Black Tower novel series.

On the other hand, Nightwish has been a source of inspiration for many bands. Black Epic vocalist Simone Simons says that Nightwish is her motivation to sing. Nicole Bogner, former lead singer of Atlanta Dream, also acknowledges Nightwish as the inspiration for their debut album. Sander Gommans, who has sunken into the world, said that Nightwish "will always inspire them to create". Tony Kakko, lead singer of power metal band Aurora Sonata, has also said that Nightwish has been a huge influence on him.

Nightwish's music combines power metal and symphonic metal. Their music has been described as "exaggerated, symphonic, and cinematic, with keyboards and strings creating a gothic atmosphere". Their music has been described as "pop with a twist", complex and multi-layered. Their music is epic, dramatic and operatic. Critic Chad Bowar says their music is "always very melodic, as well as memorable choruses with a lot of overlapping phrases.
