The full name of the University of Jena is Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, located in Jena, Thuringia, Germany, formerly known as the University of Jena, founded in 1558, is one of the oldest universities in Germany; in 1934 the name was changed to Friedrich Schiller University to commemorate the German poet Friedrich Schiller. The University of Jena has a long and prestigious history in the optics profession. The German master's degree (DaF) is rated as one of the ten best master's degree programs in Germany. As of 2005, the University of Jena has 20,500 students and 340 professors, and the current president, Klaus Dicke, is the 317th president in the history of the university.
