The Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul-UFRGS, located in Porto Alegre, is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in Brazil. The University was formerly known as the School of Chemistry and Pharmacology, founded in 1895, and later transformed into the School of Engineering. In 1934, it was founded as the University of Puerto del Fuego, and in 1974 it was officially upgraded to the status of Federal University. The university has the highest number of students and professors in the state.
